Mark will send out another call for papers for the FOCUS with a final deadline of June 19. The goal is to have it set to go before Tools for Teaching. Quality Education is the subject. Some articles have come in, but Mark would like more.
Mark suggested that we name those who have not submitted campus reports in an email as a reminder that things need to be submitted. It is uncertain whether enough reports are being submitted on a regular basis to be included in a newsletter.
It will be held at Highline and we have a theme. We are investigating a keynote and some workshop topics. We will focus on the “changing student” (gender, this generation, changing demographics, economic concerns, underprepared students).
Possibilities for a keynoter are: Neil Postman, John House from the Teaching and Learning Center right at Highline, Harold Modell (a physiologist).
Presenters should be folks who can focus on some particular piece of the changing student. Race and ethnicity, WASL fall out, developmental ed., adult basic education, Terry Bergeson was suggested as a possibility, the IBEST program, Loretta Seppanen from the State Board can talk demographics, and maybe something from the Transition Math Project would fit. Also, Podcasting and iClickers could be good... Presenters will be paid $50 ($100) for a group. We could also invite back some who offered popular sessions from previous years.
We can revise the current flyer with the new information and get it out before the end of the year. No closing session, more a social hour. The evaluation can go in the packets, plus be available at the social hour.

President Steven VanAusdle welcomed us to Walla Walla, a special place (especially in native culture). Walla Walla = many waters, maybe now we could say many wines (75 vintners currently). The viticulture center was built primarily with private partnership monies, attracting students from all over the U.S. and abroad. The city is historical and there is a commitment here to supporting and maintaining existing buildings. WWCC has a strong academic transfer faculty (Chris is a good example), but also strong professional-technical programs. There is a satellite center in Clarkston and Washington State Penitentiary. In addition the school hosts an alternative high school on campus and a WSU satellite center. Several capital projects are also underway.
Minutes for the February meeting were approved and will be posted on the website.
There was very little activity since the last meeting; Bellingham Tech, Edmonds and Whatcom are the only schools who have not paid dues for this year. Our current balance is $5960.44.
Tom was unable to attend the meeting but did check in by email.
Nothing to report.
No true new issues since Joe Safdie left. Diane suggested that we make it an assignment to bring rather than just asking people to send them directly to Diana (that is not working). It was also suggested that we move it up in the meeting agenda so you are actually reporting. We could also tackle a topic per issue – sabbaticals, increments, etc. It would allow us to present comparative perspectives. This way we share information with colleagues across the state.
Our first issue will be sabbatical policies. All representatives will send Mark Doerr their contract language around sabbaticals as well as how they actually play out (criteria, who decides, how many are offered, at what level of compensation). This would make a good future FACTC Focus topic too. Mark will compile them and they may go in the Focus.
FUTURE TOPICS - RIF language and policies, Release time for chairs and department heads, Stipends for club advisors, Reduction in Force, Evaluating online teaching, Tenure evaluation in general, Titles, Administrative evaluation,
How to move/transition people from soft money to hard money, Changing the full-time vs. part-time ratio, Transitioning basic skills students to professional-technical and academic programs.
It was suggested that we could do two topics a meeting. For instance, next Fall we can come prepared to talk about sabbaticals and RIF policies.
George and Tim shared some of the common course numbering project. There is a link directly from the state board website. Currently the work is on the department designator and then the number. Somewhere down the road the course names may be examined. An initial attempt may be publicized as early as this June for comment. Given that many of our students are now attending more than one community college, common course numbering would really help. Perhaps a report at our Fall meeting or at Tools for Teaching could be included. Go to http://www.sbctc.ctc.edu/education/CourseNumbering.asp
and click on the common course numbering link.
Nothing to report at this time.
